Antique Goldsmith Stern Anchor Sterling Silver Thimble, Silk Holder Sewing Case
This lot was found in an old Vermont estate sewing basket.
The thimble was inside the silk piece, pressed up to the tip (I pictured the thimble next to where it was lodged inside).  After puzzling over what the silk item was, I decided it was some sort of thimble holder sewing case.  Maybe it was used as a kind of guard for the fingers when sewing... I don't know, so you will have to judge for yourself.
The silk piece measures 4" long x 3" wide, and is decorated with an oriental figure, insects or butterflies, and floral accents.  The background color is black, and the border stitching is tan.  It is in great condition with wear to the pointed end where the thimble was, suggesting it was used as a finger guard.
The thimble is marked inside as shown: G with SC inside (Goldsmith, Stern & Company), 9, STERLING, and with an Anchor hallmark.

Stern Brothers & Company was originally founded in 1868 in Philadelphia by Natham Stern. From 1912 the jewelry branch was active as a separate business under the name Goldsmith, Stern & Company. The "anchor" mark was used on thimbles.  The company lasted until about 1933.
The thimble is a little out of round to fit the finger of the last user, and it is tarnished as shown, but otherwise fine, with normal signs of previous use.
