The sailor outfit school uniform (serafuku) has been worn by junior high and high school girls in Japan since 1912.
School affiliations are identified by the uniforms’ unique design features (e.g., color combinations, collar shapes,
and cape styles), with sleeve and fabric variations for summer and winter. The sailor outfit - so familiar in
Japan - is commonly worn by characters in anime and manga, and by their human counterparts in cosplay,
cross-dressing, and fetish enactments.
