Depending on the color and pattern of fabric that you choose, you can achieve a more casual or a more formal look.

The t-shirt can either be made from scratch or using a baby onesie! The pattern includes instructions for both methods.
Both items are made using stretch or knit fabric but you don't need a serger at all. I don't own one myself.
